ASK Chemicals, Hilden, Germany, recently introduced PEP SET Patriot, a new phenolic urethane nobake (PUNB) binder. This new petroleum-based binder has a longer mixed sand working life than previous PUNB binders, and it does not contain sulfur or furfuryl alcohol.
Due to the relatively short sand work time of PUNB binders, previous petroleum-based products have been constrained to small-scale manufacturing. Recent research has allowed development of PUNB binders with longer sand work times, giving larger ductile iron manufacturers a potential alternative to furan-based products.
The product is being tested in large ductile iron casting manufacturing facilities and is currently available to the North American market.
