Steel Strips Wheels inks INR 22 crore deal with Carraro-The 19th Guangzhou Die-casting, Foundry & Industry Furnace Exhibition

Economic Times reported that Punjab-based wheel rim manufacturer Steel Strips Wheels is all set to enter the European tractor market as it has inked a strategic partnership with Italy’s largest tractor major Carraro for supplying 100% of its wheel requirements.
The order is worth INR 22 crore and will be spread across 4 years. The agreement that was inked on 14 October will be extended further through a mutual understanding, said a company spokesperson.
SSWL will supply 15 different types of wheel rims to Carraro with the wheel size being larger than what it currently provides to the domestic tractor market. The spokesperson told ETAuto that work on developing the new wheel rims at a cost of INR 2 crore has already started with wheels to be ready within 9 months.
About 10,000 wheels will be supplied annually with the volume rising each year by 20 per cent as Carraro has shifted all its tractor wheel production to SSWL from its European supplier.
The wheel rims will be supplied from the company’s Dopar plant in Punjab that makes commercial wheels. The tractor capacity at the plant is being upped within a year from 60,000 units to 80,000 units per month through de-bottlenecking and a small investment in a machine for welding.
Currently, SSWL exports 5,000 tractor wheels per month to a tractor manufacturer in Japan and Thailand, but with the larger size tractor wheels being developed for Carraro, these will also be provided to other global tractor manufacturers.
The tractor wheels under development will spawn a length ranging between 15-17 inches with a diameter of 30-32 inches. The earlier tractor wheel length ranged between 8-15 inches with a diameter of 24-30 inches.
