US Steel Corporation (US Steel) was investing US$2 billion in funding and would fund it in the next five years in production revitalization work. The largest mill in the US Steel company, Gary Works, was allocated US$750 million of the investment, accounting for 37.5% of the total.
According to the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), the investment in Gary Works would not create new employment opportunities, but it would retain more than 3,800 full-time positions. IEDC would be approved for the company to provide a conditional tax credit and training grant of US$10-12 million.
Gary Works produced 7.5 million tons of crude steel per year, including steelmaking and finishing capabilities. The investment plan including new production equipment, machines and technology.
Additionally, it could provide the customer services for automotive, energy, industrial, metal construction, appliance and container industries.
