The Pueblo Chieftain reported that Evraz NA will indefinitely shut down its seamless pipe unit at its Pueblo steel mill, citing both a slowdown in U.S. oil and gas drilling and an ongoing influx of steel imports into the US from foreign producers. The move will result in the loss of about 70 jobs, the company said.
Tthe company said in a statement to The Pueblo Chieftain that “We have made adjustments to our crewing levels at the seamless mill over the past year in response to production demand due to the downturn in the oil sector. In line with current demand levels, we are temporarily idling the seamless mill, which impacts approximately 70 employees.”
It added “The drop-off in orders also stems from the influx of unfairly traded and subsidized steel imports.”
A year ago, the Pueblo mill began scaling back the pipe unit’s operation and announced a temporary layoff of up to 200 workers. Some of those jobs were restored in subsequent months. Seamless pipe is among the three main products made at the Pueblo plant, which has employed about 1,000 in recent years. The others are rail and rod-and-bar.
The move comes a month after EVRAZ announced plans for an indefinite shutdown of its large-diameter pipe unit at its Portland, Ore., mill, a move expected to result in the layoff of 230 workers by April, according to The Oregonian newspaper in Portland. The Portland mill’s steel plate unit, which recently announced a deal to help supply the Vestas wind turbine tower plant in Pueblo, continues to operate.
