Japanese shipbuilders reduced fiscal 2018-19 steel demand forecast according to the Shipbuilders Association of Japan. The main reason was due to dropping of new building orders.
The Shipbuilders Association members took part of 80% of Japanese shipbuilding capacity. The members will require 3.11 million tons of ordinary carbon steel in the fiscal year 2018-19. The quantity has dropped by 3% year on year, which was less 6.8% compared to the forecast in April.
In addition, vessel orders received by Japanese shipbuilders for export was 2.15 million gross tons from April to July which was decreasing by 32.2% year on year. Domestic ship plate consumption went down but exports of ship plate stayed firm.
However, total plate demand stayed firm in Japan from the construction and machinery industries although consumption by domestic shipbuilders went down.
