Key Technical Points in Titanium Alloy Forging-鍛造展-2026年第二十六屆廣州國際鍛造工業展覽會-Forging Exhibition-2026 China(Guangzhou)International Forging Industry Exhibition

Titanium alloys are widely used in industries such as aerospace, petrochemical, power generation, marine, and medical equipment. Their unique properties—high strength, low density, excellent corrosion resistance, and heat resistance—make them an ideal material for critical components. However, titanium forging requires strict process control to achieve the desired mechanical performance.

1. Forging Temperature Control

  • Narrow Temperature Range: Titanium alloys have poor thermal conductivity and strong chemical reactivity. The forging temperature window is relatively narrow, usually between 900°C – 1050°C, depending on the alloy grade.
  • Overheating Risk: Excessive temperature leads to coarse grains and reduced toughness.
  • Low Temperature Risk: Insufficient temperature can cause cracks due to poor plasticity.

2. Deformation and Forging Force

  • Titanium alloys show high deformation resistance compared to steel. This requires higher press loads and specialized forging equipment.
  • Proper multi-step deformation is necessary to refine the grain structure and improve mechanical properties.

3. Tooling and Lubrication

  • Titanium alloys have strong adhesion to dies, so die sticking and wear are common problems.
  • Graphite-based or glass lubricants are typically used to reduce friction and extend die life.

4. Heat Treatment after Forging

  • Post-forging heat treatment (solution treatment, aging, or annealing) is essential to optimize strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance.
  • Different alloys (e.g., TC4 / Ti-6Al-4V) require tailored heat treatment procedures.

5. Surface Quality and Defect Control

  • Titanium is highly reactive with oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen at high temperatures, forming an embrittled surface layer (alpha-case).
  • Proper surface protection (argon atmosphere, protective coatings) and post-forging machining are critical to remove defects.

Conclusion

Titanium alloy forging is a highly specialized process that demands precise control of temperature, deformation, lubrication, and heat treatment. By following these technical points, manufacturers can produce titanium forgings with excellent performance, long service life, and reliability for demanding industrial applications.
