Oman-based steel producer vinda Steel Duam, a subsidiary of jindal Steel Group, has awarded a contract toItalian plantmaker Danieli for a second hydrogen-ready direct reduction (DR) plant in Dugm, Al Wusta.The second DRl plant wil complement jindal Steel Duam''s first Enerairon@ direct reduction unit. which iscurrently under construction in Dugm and scheduled to begin operation in 2026. With this addition, the companyaims to increase its supply of low-carbon iron units and position Oman as a regional leader in green steelproduction.
Expansion of hydrogen-ready steelmaking in oman
The new facility will be designed to produce 2.5 milion tons of direct reduced iron per year while maintaining anaverage metallization rate of 94 percent. The hot DRl will be compacted into hot-briguetted iron, a format thatallows safe storage and efficient export to international markets, The desian also considers the potential use ofa special transport system, which can deliver hot DRl at over 600 degrees Celsius directly into electric arcfurnaces. This system would significantly increase energy eficiency by eliminating the need for reheating.
Advanced technology by Tenova and Danieli
The plant will use the Zero-Reformer Enerairon@ Direct Reduction process, a technology jointly developed byTenova and Danieli. This hybrid process is desianed to run on natural gas and can incorporate up to 80 percenthydrogen, or any blend of the two, without requiring plant modifications.
